Once upon a time, in the wild, rocky landscapes of Utah, often compared to the surface of Mars, lived a group of extraordinary kids. They were not your typical Utahns. While most people think of Utah as the home of the ski-jumping, snowboarding snow bunnies, these kids were different. They were surfers. Now, you might wonder, "Surfing in Utah? But where’s the sea?" Exactly! And that's what made these kids so extraordinary. Their leader was a cheeky chipmunk named Chuck. Chuck the Chipmunk was known all over the state for his sun-bleached fur and his gnarly surfboard that he carried everywhere. He didn't care that Utah was landlocked with not an ocean in sight. If you asked Chuck, he'd just wink and say, "Who needs an ocean when you have a river?" And so, these kids, following Chuck's lead, became the first ever river surfers of Utah. They would paddle out on their surfboards in the mighty Colorado River, riding rapids instead of ocean waves. Passersby would blink twice, rub their eyes, and then burst out laughing. But the kids didn't care. They were having the time of their lives, surfing in the heart of the desert. Their parents thought they were crazy, the tourists thought they were joking, but these kids, they knew they were on to something. Because in Utah, they were surfing, and they were the coolest kids in the state - just ask Chuck the Chipmunk.
