In the wide-open prairies of North Dakota, where the sky seems to stretch on forever and the bison outnumber the people, a ragtag group of youngsters have found a pastime that stirs their hearts and stirs up a lot of dust too—softball. Crowded around the diamond, they swing their bats with the ferocity of a charging bison, and they run the bases with the speed of a prairie dog chased by a coyote. Among them is a girl named Lucy "Lightning" Lasso. Now, Lucy isn't your ordinary softball-playing kiddo. She's a girl with a golden glove, a bat that seems to have been blessed by the softball gods, and a throw that could outrun a tornado. Oh, and she has the magical ability to control the wind, but that's just a minor detail! Lucy and her teammates, the Prairie Pumas, are the local legends of North Dakota. And their games are more fun than a barrel full of prairie dogs! They love the thrill of the hit, the cheer of the crowd, and the satisfaction of a game well played. And they don’t mind the occasional tumble in the dust, because in North Dakota, dust is just a part of the game. But make no mistake, while they may be a bit rough around the edges, these kids play with a lot of heart. The laughter and cheers that echo across the prairie as they play are as warm and welcoming as a North Dakota sunset. So, if you ever find yourself in this glorious state, don’t forget to cheer for the Prairie Pumas, the softball champs of the wild, wild North Dakota.
