In the wide-open, sky-touching reaches of the great state of Montana, affectionately known as MT, there's an extraordinary group of kids. They go by the "Muddy Mitts Club," a group of youngsters with a fondness for squishing, sqooshing, and shaping lumps of clay into amazing works of art. They're the whiz-kid wizards of the pottery wheel, the masters of ceramic in a state more known for its cowboy hats than its clay pots. Montana, a state that's more giant sky than solid ground, has all sorts of outdoor fun to offer. From cavorting with the grizzlies at Glacier National Park to fishing in the mighty Missouri river, it's a place where adventure is as common as grasshoppers in a wheat field. But when the day is done and the wild winds of the west quiet down, the Muddy Mitts Club gather in their clay-filled cavern for a pottery party. The leader of this ragtag bunch is a charismatic cowboy potter named Clay Colt. This isn’t your average cowboy, folks. With a hat made of hardened clay and boots that kick up dust like a pottery wheel, Clay Colt guides our young friends through the magical world of pottery. With his trusty horse, Kiln, Clay Colt would draw shapes in the Montana dirt, teaching the kids how to mold their ideas into reality. There was never a dull moment when Clay Colt rode into town. His laughter was as infectious as chicken pox and his jokes could make a buffalo snort. “Why did the clay go to school? Because it wanted to be a little potter!” he’d say, as the club erupted into giggles. In Montana, with its endless horizons and the Muddy Mitts Club, imagination is the only limit for what a lump of clay might become.
